Behind The Badge: Christopher Kim, Police Lieutenant (Ret.)

Prior to joining the Utility team, Christopher began his career with the U.S. Army as a military police officer then later joined the Dekalb County Police Department.

Christopher joined the Utility, Inc. team as a Law Enforcement Trainer in 2023. In his current role he applies his over 24 years of knowledge in the public safety sector and his experience utilizing our life-saving technology to help serve the agencies he once worked alongside.

Christopher sat with Utility’s Blog Editor to answer a few questions about his story:

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself Christopher.

A:  I started my career in the military in the U.S. Army as military police.

Upon leaving the army after 7 years, I decided to join the police force. I started law enforcement with DeKalb County Police Department.

Last year I retired with nearly 27 years of service. I am married and have 2 beautiful children, ages 27 (man) and 24 (woman). I love playing golf and soccer.

After retirement, I decided to go back to work and joined Utility, Inc. two months ago.

Q: What inspired you to choose the path of working in
Law Enforcement?

A: When I joined Military Police, I was serving my country. This has inspired me to help others,
hence the reason for my joining the police department.

A: When I was in the COPS Unit, I was able to work directly with the community. Helping the community made me realize what an officer is supposed to do in terms of serving the community.  I was also in charge of the DUI Task Force. Reducing the number of accidents and ensuring drunk drivers were off the street was the assignment I was proud of.

Q: What has been your biggest “lesson learned” that you’d like to share with other Law Enforcement leaders?

A:  Treat all citizens like they are your family. To be a leader, one must lead by example and coach one another to be the best they can be.

Q: What does Transparency mean to you?

A: It means doing the right thing all the time. Information and decision-making should be open to the public all the time.

Q: How have you seen Technology aid in Law Enforcement?

A: The saying “we always did it this way” should be thrown out the window. We should be able to keep up with technology to make our career better. Systems that can help officers to be more effective while performing their assigned duties.

Q:  What advice would you give to an agency that is going through the process of selecting a Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS)?

A: Ensure your officers know why they need them and how this can benefit their daily work.

At the end of the day, the officer is responsible for his safety and career. Many products are out in the market, so
we must make sure they select one they can trust.

Never ask an officer to do what Technology can do for them!
